faithful, stably constituted in a particular Church, whose pastoral care, under the authority of the diocesan Bishop, is entrusted to the parish priest as its proper pastor (c. 515 § 1). The fundamental and constitutive element of the parish is therefore personal: "communitas christifidelium" - "community of the faithful" called together by the Word of God and the sacraments, especially the sacrament of the Eucharist, is a portion of the new People of God. It is a community of the faithful, although not the only one. The essential elements of Christ's Church are present in the parish: the proclamation of the Word of God, the celebration of the Eucharist and the other sacraments, the communion of the Holy Spirit, ordained ministry, prayer, the service of charity, etc. The parish is truly Church: a community of faith, celebration, charity and missionary presence in society and the world (LG 28, SC 42; PO 5-6; AG 15). It is an irreplaceable ecclesial institution, but at the same time it is insufficient. Irreplaceable because it is through it that the majority of people come into contact with the Church; insufficient because it is not capable, on its own, of carrying out the mission of evangelisation if it is not in communion with the particular Church and properly integrated into the pastoral area and the vicariate, revitalised and strengthened with apostolic movements and small communities. It is exclusively up to the diocesan bishop to erect, suppress or alter parishes, which will not happen without first hearing the Presbyteral Council. A legitimately erected parish enjoys juridical personality by right (c. 515 § 3); (Cf. PRISCO, José San José, Derecho Parroquial, Guía Canónica y Pastoral, Ed. In 1271, with the help of the generosity of King Afonso III and the people of Lisbon, construction began on the convent in the area where we still have it today, which at the time was called Almofala. This monastery was founded in the same year on the "outside" of the city walls, thus justifying the building's place name. Later, in 1580, the Philippine Dynasty began, and the great work it left behind was the reconstruction of the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora. This project had Filippo Terzi, Juan Herrera and Baltazar Álvares as its main architects and is considered to be the first great Mannerist construction in Portugal, which served as a model for other religious buildings. However, it was during the lavish reigns of Pedro II and João V (17th and 18th centuries) that the monastery was rebuilt. The monastery was occupied by canons of the Regent Order of St Augustine from its foundation until 1834, when the religious orders were abolished. During this period, St Anthony passed through the monastery, where he lived out his early days as a monk. In the 19th century, it became part of the state and the Gil Vicente Lyceum, among other state services, was installed there. Today, the Monastery of St Vincent is closely linked to the service of the Bishop of Lisbon. Sharing its patron saint - St Vincent - with the Patriarchate of Lisbon, the building currently houses the services of the diocesan Curia and is the place where the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon governs the diocese and welcomes those who come to see him. In addition to the Curia, administrative services and the Patriarchal Tribunal, the Monastery also houses a museum space that seeks to record the most important moments in the history and legacy of the Patriarchate of Lisbon.
